If you don’t mind Stitching my jeans one leg at a time If you don’t mind, baby go ahead If you don’t mind Taking me home with a head full of wine If you don’t mind baby go ahead Play to my doubts What are you laughing about? What are you laughing about, baby go ahead If you can’t see How a simple little trip can bring a man to his knees If you can’t see baby go ahead If you can’t see How an easy mistake can ruin every belief If you can’t see baby go ahead Play to my doubts What are you laughing about What are you laughing about, baby go ahead And take me out Go on and spin me around Go on and spin me around, yeah, baby go ahead All this talk and no play We scream every word we say Until it hurts our throats It really hurts my throat, this time I’m at a loss Spinning my nickels whatever the cost I’m at a loss over what’s been said I’m at a loss Turned head over heel like a coin in a toss I’m at a loss over what’s been said If you don’t mind Stitching my jeans one leg at a time If you don’t mind, baby go ahead

A crippled crow cries a dying song There’s a burned-out patch of earth where the crime got done And a low grey sky don’t forgive the sun When that crippled crow cries it’s dying song See the man try to stand with his back all torn See the broken branch from the night we stormed When we cut him down I heard that bugle horn When the man tried to stand with his back all torn Silently we all scream No nothing makes a sound It’s black & white up on the screen All the color’s been drained-out If anything means anything This should mean something Damn the trees, damn the silent ground Damn the people’s eyes that just look around Damn the tongues that never make a sound Damn us all to the burning grounds

Boredom hangs like fruit in a tree Wait for white rabbits to rescue me One makes you larger and one makes you small As long as I don’t have to stay the same is all Oh, Alice, say it aint true The looking glass lies to you The queen of hearts eats her duchess tarts And I just want to go to bed Cheshire cat never takes a nap I wish that it was off with his head I’m positive this is how we live Our minds can get away from us But the caterpillar with his smoke ring filler Never does too much Oh Alice say it aint true The looking glass lies to you Oh Alice say it aint true This aint no wonderland without you

My hero he’s a killer A breaker of men A wounder with words he’s done it again and again My hero tips his hat And leaves us with a wink He talks in a circle but he growls when he sings And all my attempts don’t add up to anything Strip the lanterns Strip the lanterns Strip the lanterns from the streets My hero sees the world Through his powder blue eyes He sees into my heart but he doesn’t seem surprised My hero sits alone At the back of the bar Hank Williams on the jukebox as he cuts a cheap cigar What do you have to trade? Is it just a soul that can never be saved? Should the devil call my name How will I answer? How will I answer ? How will I answer when the deal gets made? My hero’s burned the cotton He’s salted all the land He points out the direction with the back of his hand My hero’s drained the delta He’s poisoned all the wells He’s foreclosed on all our futures and he bids a fond farewell

about

"Strip The Lanterns" is an 11-track LP released in 2011. Written by Alec Gross and produced by Greg Barbone, Alec Gross, and Will Hensley, the album was recorded at Mission Sound in New York City 2010.

"Strip The Lanterns" realizes singer-songwriter Alec Gross' visions of a new Americana-- a musical soundscape that moves beyond the typical acoustic guitars and plaintive vocals, and is augmented by unexpected blasts of raw, Stax-era R&B-- to paint visual, even cinematic scenes of a somewhere USA that is at once familiar, but ultimately troubled.
